What's New in Version 3.0

WHAT'S NEW IN 3.0: iPad UI, Discover, Handwriting recognition, new Flashcards, updated JLPT lists.


★ As promised, this application is now a universal binary. It will run fullscreen on your iPhone and iPad.

★ On iPhone Japanese is now much easier to use. Rotate your iPhone to use Japanese in landscape mode.

★ Discover! The "All Entries" screen has been replaced with a new way to explore frequently used words in the Japanese language.

★ The search scope bar has been replaced with an integrated button. Select [a...] to search for entries that begin with or [...a] to search for entries that end in the given term.

★ Almost never used kanji that cluttered up the search results are now a thing of the past. Search does not show those unused kanji anymore but is limited to those 7000 kanji that are actually used.

★ Integrated handwriting recognition. You no longer need to use the iOS Chinese Handwriting keyboard.

★ Updated data for kanji components search. Often used characters are now highlighted, making them easier to find.

★ The Handwriting, Components and SKIP search are now accessible from any search box.

★ For those new to the Japanese language, word readings (aka Romaji) are now available for all dictionary entries, including kanji. Lists and search results show frequently used kanji readings.

★ Updated JLPT lists! We finally got our hands on N3 vocabulary and while we were at it we updated all other JLPT lists too. (Please keep in mind that the owner of the JLPT does not release official vocabulary lists)

★ Completely new flashcards based on your feedback. The SRS scheduling algorithm used in previous versions has been completely rewritten to better schedule repetitions.

★ You can select [Study] in the new Discover screen to study a random selection of commonly used words and/or due flashcards.

★ When studying you now have the option to automatically set the label of a word, for example you can have the system change the color of all learned words to green.

★ List of ignored flashcards. When you decided to ignore a flashcard but wanted to study that word later anyway, you had to remember which entries you ignored. This is no longer needed.

★ Share lists with friends and classmates by email. Copy that received email to the clipboard and select New in the lists screen to paste it

★ If the clipboard contains Japanese words, then the [New] button will offer you an option to create a new list with these words.

★ Paste a list of words into a label to quickly change the headword color of all entries.

★ You can now also add example sentences to your custom lists.

★ Search in custom lists.

★ Backup and restore your data from within the application. You can also use this feature to transfer data to your other devices.

★ Import files from other apps like Rikaichan or Midori.

★ History list is no longer limited to 100 entries and you can add all entries of the history list to a custom list easily.

★ Japanese now understands the japanese:// URL scheme. Use japanese://search/cake to start a new search for "cake" or japanese://entry/福岡 to open the entry for 福岡 Fukuoka (city).

3.0 rocks!! (5 stars)
The 3.0 update fixes all of the little problems I was running into with this app. iPad support, a japanese://search/ URL scheme, and more. Looking at the list of changes I was nodding enthusiastically, and in using with the app everything has been polished further -- even the icon looks better.

The new Discover feature is nicer than I was expecting. Will be a good screensaver for a docked iPad!

If you're learning Japanese or have any interest in the language, this app is hands-down the best app out there. It has everything you need and more, all easy to find and organized. Throughout my 3 years of studying Japanese in college I used this app thousands of times. No other app comes close.
