The eye is considered hypermetropic when the image of the object observed at infinity is beyond the retinal plane. This can occur due to reduced anteroposterior length in relation to the power of refraction of theeyes optical system (axial hypermetropy), low refractive power of the eye in terms of its anteroposterior diameteror a combination of these conditions.

The symptoms of hypermetropy depend on a number of factors such as its magnitude, range of accommodation and the patients age.

Low visual acuity and symptoms that characterize asthenopia such as headache, difficulty in reading, watering eyes, burning and pain may be complaints observed in these patients.In children, hypermetropy can also manifest itself as accommodative endodeviations, requiring adequate treatment against amblyopia.

Total hypermetropy in a patient can be measured after cycloplegia and consists of the sum of manifest and latent fractions. Manifesthypermetrophy represents the fraction that is not composed of the absolute and the facultative.

Absolute hypermetropy represents the fraction that is not corrected by accommodation, whereas facultative hypermetropy is the portion corrected by accommodation.
