Description

Wheres my MBTA Bus? Version 1.4
Developed by Alex Grinman, Brookline High School, MA

This app is intended for Massachusetts residents who use the same bus routes everyday to get to work or to school. It can help them decide if they have to rush to make the bus, or if they can restfully finish their morning coffee without fear.

The app's user interface is designed to be very simple and intuitive. There is nothing extra: you select your bus route, whether you are going inbound or outbound, and your bus stop. The app will then predict the arrival time for up to four incoming vehicles and you can locate the first one on the map. You can also save stops as favorites to ensure quick access to them at any time.

There are two optional settings. You can choose to go straight to the last stop you viewed, whenever you load the app. You can also turn on automatic refreshing of prediction times and bus locations on the map.

This app relies on the MassDOT's award-winning open data initiative, which releases information, including real-time GPS locations and arrival countdown information, for all bus routes. This App is compatible with the iPhone and iPod Touch, but it requires an Internet connection (3G or WiFi) to get access to MBTA's partner, NextBus, who actually provides the real-time data.

The developer thanks the Boston University Mobile team who introduced him to the iPhone development environment, and was very helpful during the course of the project.

What's New in Version 1.4

-fixed route list index to accommodate MBTA’s new non-numeric route tags like 24/27 or 32/33
-fixed predictions to accommodate MBTA’s recent changes in data formatting that eliminated stop ids for over 500 stops

Customer Reviews

Life Saver (5 stars)
I was waiting for the #1 bus and pulled the application down to check it out. It's pretty straightforward to get started. Sure enough the bus came pretty much as expected. Did the same thing on the return trip. The bonus was that it noted the parallel line's arrival (CT1) at the same stop, which turned out to be much earlier. And sure enough it came around the corner just as the map suggested it would. Psychic... The question on the

Finally, something good!!! (5 stars)
Ever since I lived in London 5 years ago (where they have real-time ETA boards at most of the tube and bus stations) I have been desperately wishing for Boston to do something similar. This is an incredibly accurate tracking system, and seriously helps me time my travel. A MUST for anyone dependent on MBTA busses as part of their commute!

Unreliable (2 stars)
I gave this app 2 out of 5 stars, because that's about how often I miss the bus because of it-2 out of 5 times.
