Introducing the first Yellowstone iPhone app made by people who live and work in Yellowstone National Park. It is designed to answer the everyday questions that one asks while driving around the Park, such as "Where is the nearest restroom?" or "What is the weather going to be like at Old Faithful today?" or "When did this part of the Park burn?"

This app includes complete GPS enabled maps of Yellowstone at 1:17,000 scale, including all thermal areas, contour lines, backcountry campsites, trailheads, and trails with a mileage guide. The park terrain is represented by shaded relief, and there is a descriptive legend for all map features. There are five levels of zoom in the map; the fourth level is shown as a screen shot.

The wildlife guide includes photos of Yellowstone's "Big 8" wildlife, a guide to locating them in the park, the latest ecology topics for each, traits of each animal, and a scat and tracks guide.

The weather guide gives a 10-day forecast for eighteen locations around the park as well as apparel suggestions and climate descriptions for each season. Especially useful is the apps ability to cache the forecast so that no cell phone signal is required to access itvery important in a park that largely has no cell phone coverage.

The fire guide contains short articles on important topics such as fire management, ecology and history, including an interactive map showing burned areas in recent years. A special section is devoted to 1988 and the eight major fires that consumed the park during that devastating summer.

Also included in the app is a guide to activities such as horseback riding, rafting, safaris, and boating on Yellowstone Lake. Additionally, there are maps to show you where to locate a restroom, where to buy fuel, where to find emergency services, and where to find a cell phone signal, should you need to make a call.

The music section of the app provides the user with all of the liner notes and photos from Yellowstone for Violin and Orchestra. This is included simply to make the user aware of Jett Hitts anthem to the park; the actual music requires a separate purchase from the iTunes store. Listeners have called it the perfect soundtrack for driving around the park, and critics have called it full of the grandeur of the park, with soaring violin melodies. What's New in Version 1.5

Version 1.5 introduces GPS functionality to the major maps in the app, and thus will show your position on the map. This was our most requested feature, and it is a free upgrade. This feature requires an iPhone or an iPad with the Smartphone package. The iPod Touch will only show your position when you have a Wi-Fi connection. This is a limitation of the device, since it does not communicate with satellites. Check our website for information on planned future updates.

Very useful app for anyone in Yellowstone (5 stars)
I spend a lot of time in the backcountry in Yellowstone. The interactive map with trail information and backcountry camp sites has been most useful part of this app for me. Having this feature on an easily accessible app has freed me up from carrying a map.

I am a regular Yellowstone visitor, visiting on average once per month. I've been smug about always knowing where the closest rest room facility is as well as where I can pick up cell phone signal. Great addition to a Yellowstone visit (5 stars)
I have worked in Yellowstone for 15 years, and I have been using this app scine the Verizon iPhone came out. Having such a detailed map right on my phone is just awesome. Last night, I downloaded version 1.5, and today I was able to watch myself on the map as I drove across the park. Pretty cool!
