Popular Mechanics QuakeTracker by Hearst Communications, Inc.

Popular Mechanics QuakeTracker Screenshots

Description

Watch U.S. earthquakes unfold, just seconds after they occur. QuakeTracker displays data from the United States Geological Survey on an interactive map, using pulsing yellow circles to indicate a quake's magnitude. Tilt the map using a two-finger swipe to see the quake's depth. Zoom in to see more detail.

QuakeTracker has two modes. The first is Latest U.S. Seismic Activity. The app downloads data from the previous seven days, then displays any quake measuring 3.25 or greater in a time-lapse visualization, showing the magnitude and depth as each quake hits. The second mode is Top Ten Quakes, which displays the biggest seismic events in the lower 48 states since 1860. In addition to the graphical display, both modes list the time, date, location, magnitude, and depth of the quake.

QuakeTracker originally appeared in an iPad-optimized issue of Popular Mechanics. Check out Popular Mechanics magazine in the App Store, or visit us at popularmechanics.com.

Bug fix

Customer Reviews

Great Idea (3 stars)
I second the previous reviewer suggestion. Just have the ability to stop the timeline. The info flies by so fast I can't even read half of it. But think this can be a great app.

This is a joke (1 star)
This app scrolls through recent earthquakes so fast you can't read all the data (can't pause it or rewind either!) nor can you tap for more detailed info on a particular incident. It's junk. I deleted it. Would have been useful here in NorCal if it wasn't so badly written.

Potentially interesting, but currently useless (2 stars)
Looks cool, but with inability to stop and focus on a specific earthquake makes the ap useless. the timeline advances so quickly, user is unable to learn anything. Will keep the ap loaded for a while with the hope for an update to fix this problem. Won't use again however, until problem is fixed. Still waiting...
